How to restore EBS volume from Snapshot backup

If you are not a member of Elastic Cloud Gate here is the guideline to restore volume from a snapshot using the AWS Management Console:

  1. Under EC2, got to “Snapshot” section and identify the snapshot from which you want to restore the volume.

    If you don’t see the “Volume” column on the snapshots list, open Show/Hide Columns and check “Volume”.

  2. Select the volume identified in #1 and from the “Actions” select “Create Volume”.

  3. In the new window, select Volume Type and Availability Zone. Remember that the Availability Zone has to be the same as the one where your EC2 instance was launched from. Click Create.

  4. Go to Instances. Find the instance for which you are restoring volume. Under “Description” look for “Block devices” identify the volume that will be replaced with the new one. Make note of the block device (e.g. /dev/sda1, xvdf, etc) as well as the ID of EBS.

  5. Go to Volume section. If you have many volumes you can find the right one by typing ID in “Search Volumes” filed.

  6. Select the volume and from “Actions” click “Force Detach Volume”. Remember, if the restoring volume is the root volume (/dev/sda1) you have to stop EC2 instance before detaching volume.

  7. After the volume was detached, select the volume that was created in #2. From the “Actions” select “Attach Volume”.

  8. In the new window, select the Instance to which you want to attach the volume. In Device field type the device that you noted in #4. Click Attach.

  9. Start an instance if necessary

If you are a member of Elastic Cloud Gate, here is a shorter version of restoring EBS volume

  1. Under EC2, from the volume menu select “Snapshots”.

  2. In the snapshot windows from the menu select “Restore Volume”.

  3. In the Restore Volume window Click “Restore”. Optionally you can enter the new size of the volume.
