How to transfer EC2 Instances between AWS accounts

In this article we will explain how to copy your AWS EC2 resources from one AWS account to another, using Elastic Cloud Gate console.

Before you start, please make sure that both source and destination accounts are already setup.
If not, click “Manage Accounts” and add missing account(s).

When both accounts are setup, follow these steps:

  1. From the Dashboard click “Disaster Recovery”

  2. Click “Create Disaster Recovery”

  3. Under “General” tab:
    • Enter DR name
    • Select source and destination region. The region can be the same or different.
    • Check “Setup Disaster Recovery under different AWS account” box.
    • Select destination account from the list.
    • Click “Next”.

  4. Under “Resource Section” tab select EC2 instances and ELB that you want to copy to destination account. Click “Next”

  5. Under “Resource Configuration” tab make additional configuration for destination EC2 instance:
    • You can select different instance type.
    • Select if you want/don’t want to have the EC2 instance running in destination account after transfer process is finished.
    • Click “Next”.

  6. Under “AZ Mapping” tab you can setup destination Availability Zone. Click “Next”

  7. Under “Schedule” tab, if this is one time copy process, check: “Don’t use scheduler to update Disaster Recovery resources on regular basis” box. If not, you can use schedule so that EC2 instance or Volume in destination account will be updated on regular basis.

  8. Click “Finish”.

After you finish, the new record will appeared in the upper table. In the “Status” column you will see the progress status. You can refresh table by clicking “refresh” button located on top right side of the table.
